County music is not just a sound or a feeling, and is a lot more than a two step and a good time. According to Tyler Whelan, country music is the twang in life.
Born October 17, the last of five children to Shirley and Joseph Whelan, in Fort McMurray, Alberta; Tyler was introduced at a very young and influential age, to the wonderful world of music. With his mother being a former singer, and his father fluent in both languages of fiddle and guitar, it was only a matter of time before Tyler should pick up something and start speaking his own language.
Like every boy at a young age, he wanted to be like dad when he grew up. As soon as he could hold a fiddle, he was taking lessons and playing his heart out. Not long after, he would pursue a mistress called the drums. Tyler, being very capable in both worlds, joined his fathers band on stage at fifteen years old which he would soon after, call 'home'.
Writing his own songs since he could play a chord, and playing since he could hold an instrument; it was only natural that Tyler should pursue his love of music even further. 'Tailgate' was one of Tyler's first music ventures outside of playing in his fathers band. Tailgate toured western Canada along side bands such as The Poverty Plainsman, Duane Steele, Chris Cummings and more. When the band dis-assembled a short while later, Tyler decided it was time to go solo.
After re-connecting with Johnny Gasparic of The Poverty Plainsman, an audio engineer, it was time to lay Tyler's first solo album. With the help of Don Jorgensen, Brian Kelly, and Brad Johnson, the album 'Oldschool' came to life.
Shortly after the release of 'Oldschool', childhood dreams started coming true. Tyler was introduced to fellow country musician Kenny Hess, who would ultimately become a good friend and mentor. He credits Merle Haggard, Garth Brooks, Bob Dylan, Mark Collie, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as having influenced his music over the years.
Tyler has shared stages with Kenny Hess, Charlie Major, Dwight Yoakam, Trooper, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band just to name a few.
An extremely talented man, with a love for life, and knack for catchy tunes. In his own words, ' I am thankful for my life and the fact that I get to share my music with people! If you come to a show feel free to come say hi!"
